New Citizens Leading, Serving on L&P Board
(Traverse City, Michigan) —Traverse City Light & Power’s (L&P) board elected a new chairman, vice-chairman and secretary, and welcomed the newest member of the L&P board at its regular meeting on May 8, 2012.
Patrick McGuire was elected chairman of the board, John Taylor was elected vice-chairman and Ed Rice, executive director of L&P, was re-elected secretary of the board. Each will serve a one-year term. Robert Spence, III, newly appointed by the city commission on May 7, 2012 to serve on the L&P board for a term of five years, attended his first regular meeting.
“I’m honored to be elected board chairman of Traverse City Light and Power. Our local electric utility is a uniquely valuable asset to the citizens of Traverse City, and I take this new responsibility seriously. I look forward to working with the other board members and staff providing safe, reliable power to our customers as efficiently as possible,” McGuire said after his appointment. “It’s also important for me to thank Mike Coco for his just completed two years of service as board chair. Mike did a superb job, and set a high standard of service I hope to maintain.”
Patrick McGuire has been on the L&P board since November 2011. McGuire has extensive experience in accounting and financial management of companies involved in the exploration and development of oil and natural gas. Currently he is employed as controller for a local energy company. McGuire was also a member of the Citizen's Operational and Financial Analysis Committee from its inception in 2007 through the submittal of its report to the city commission in 2009. Most of his time was devoted to the component unit subcommittee which focused on L&P as one of the City’s component units. McGuire and his wife live in the Slabtown neighborhood of Traverse City.
John Taylor has been on the L&P board since 2010 and has extensive background in energy efficiency. Taylor is a senior manager for a consortium of energy organizations in the U.S. and Canada, where he serves as their liaison to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Taylor also volunteers as chairperson of the board of SEEDS, a solutions-focused environmental non-profit organization. He has masters degrees in economics and policy from Duke University. He and his family live in the Central neighborhood of Traverse City.
Robert Spence, III is the vice president of a 120 year-old general contracting and construction management firm that has offices located in Traverse City, Saginaw and Ann Arbor. Spence sits on the City Opera House Heritage Association and the Small Business Association of Michigan board of directors. He also is the assistant coach for the Grand Traverse Hockey Association’s JV program, the Traverse City West hockey team and the Traverse City North Stars Junior A Hockey Club. Spence lives in the Central neighborhood of Traverse City.
