L&P Undergrounding Utilities on Bay Street
(Traverse City, Michigan) — Traverse City Light & Power (L&P) plans to begin work early next month on its Bay Street Undergrounding Project, a bayfront beautification project that consists of removing the overhead electric facilities on Bay Street along West Grand Traverse Bay, and placing them underground.
The project will consist of two phases commencing with the installation of underground conduits, manholes and related facilities in May and June of this year. In the fall of 2011, the electric cables will be installed in the conduits followed by the removal of poles and overhead wires. Work will be curtailed during the busy summer tourist season.
The exact location for the work on Bay Street is the section east of Division Street to the Lighthouse Pole. There will also be additional work on Bay Street, west of Division Street, up to the Wayne Street intersection.
“L&P is pleased that this community project is coming to fruition,” said Ed Rice, L&P executive director. “This bayfront aesthetic improvement project has been planned for several years and was originated in conjunction with the Your Bay – Your Say study which has now transformed into the Bayfront Improvement Project.”
Concurrent with the L&P project, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will be performing a ground contamination remediation project at the intersection of Front Street and Division Street.
L&P has coordinated its project with the MDEQ project to minimize the amount of traffic disruption at the Division Street, Front Street and Grandview Parkway locations.
An effort is being made to keep the impact on traffic at a minimum, however motorists are advised to seek alternative routes when possible. During the week of May 16 – 20, L&P will be installing conduit under Division Street and the Grandview Parkway over the course of two nights. In order to expedite the work on the intersection and keep disruptions to a minimum during the two nights, work will occur between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. and traffic will be reduced to two lanes.
There will be a public Information Sharing Session, conducted by the Michigan Department of Transportation, MDEQ and L&P, on April 27 for the public to have an opportunity to review plans and details of the upcoming work scheduled for the Division Street area (see enclosed flyer). L&P will be in attendance to review plans for the Bay Street Undergrounding Project. The meeting is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at theTraverse City Chamber of Commerce. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
