L&P Board to Vote on Investigation of Photovoltaic Project
(Traverse City, Michigan) — The Traverse City Light & Power (L&P) board will vote on whether or not to approve further investigation of a small, local photovoltaic generation project at its next board meeting on July 10, beginning at 5:15 p.m. at the Governmental Center.
L&P staff have been investigating a 50 kilowatt photovoltaic generation project and presented the most recent findings to the board at the June 26 board meeting. Staff is recommending funding the project through a “green rate,” a concept initially developed by TCL&P for the wind turbine located on M-72. Through the “green rate” customers would purchase a 100 kilowatt hour “sun block” of solar generation, which would replace 100 kilowatt hours of mostly coal generation. Customers participating in the program would pay approximately $16 a month for one “sun block,” in addition to their monthly bill.
Both residential and commercial customers would be able to participate in the project and would be allowed to purchase more than one 100 kilowatt hour “sun block” of solar generation. In total, 59 customers would need to sign up for one “sun block” to cover the cost of the project. The expected life of the project would be approximately 25 years.
Initial interest in a photovoltaic generation project came from L&P customers who were unable to install solar panels at their home due to tree shading or house siting issues, but wanted to receive some electricity generated by the sun.
If the board approves moving forward with the project, staff plans to seek customers willing to purchase “sun blocks” prior to proceeding with further development of the project.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend this meeting and voice their opinion regarding the proposed project. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can email Jim Cooper at email@example.com to provide comment. All emailed comments will be forwarded to the board.
