Sirens Blast at T.C. Dams Tuesday Morning (4-11-06)
(Traverse City, Michigan) — “If you hear sirens sounding off Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m., don’t be alarmed,” advises Jim Cooper, Marketing Manager for Traverse City Light & Power. “It’s just our annual testing of the emergency sirens that would warn residents if there was ever any catastrophic situation affecting the Boardman River dams.”
According to Cooper, the testing is required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which still has jurisdiction over the dams until Traverse City Light & Power (L&P) removes its hydroelectric power generation equipment from the Brown Bridge, Boardman and Sabin Dams and transfers operation of the dams back to the original owners: the City of Traverse City and Grand Traverse County. The owners will then determine whether the dams will remain in place or will be removed.
Traverse City Light & Power (www.tclp.org) is a community-owned, community- focused municipal utility that offers energy at low rates in the region to over 10,000 customers in Traverse City, and parts of Blair, East Bay, Elmwood, Garfield, Peninsula and Paradise townships.
