A pioneering Michigan wind turbine owned by L&P was recently repaired.*

When the wind turbine stopped working late last year, here is what happened:
On January 25, 2010, a crane with a 200-foot tall boom was used to lower the 7,040 pound generator from L&P's 160-foot tall wind turbine along M-72 in Leelanau County's Elmwood Township.
Workers discovered that a damaged bearing in the turbine's generator had also damaged the generator shaft.
The shaft was repaired, new bearings replaced old ones and a complete cleaning and testing was conducted.
All tests indicated no further repairs are required. The reconditioned generator was installed in early February.
Total cost for removal, repairs and testing and reinstallation was approximately $27,200.
* Originally erected in June of 1996, Light & Power became the first Michigan municipal electric utility to install a utility scale wind turbine. At the time of construction, with a blade diameter of 144 feet on a 160-foot tower, it was the largest operating wind turbine in the country!
