Utility Bill Payment Scam

The Michigan Public Service Commission is warning consumers of a telephone scam that demands people immediately pay energy bills using prepaid credit cards.

Consumers should never give out personal information, including financial account numbers or social security numbers, over the phone or internet to someone they do not know.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be your utility company and feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call the customer service number on your utility bill. Traverse City Light & Power customers should contact customer service at 231-922-4431 to report any suspicious phone calls.
