New People Leading, Serving on L&P Board
(Traverse City, Michigan) — Mike Coco was elected Chairman of the Traverse City Light & Power (L&P) Board of Directors at the May 11, 2010, regularly scheduled meeting of the Board. Linda Johnson was elected Vice-Chairperson. Ed Rice, Executive Director of L&P, was re-elected Secretary of the Board. John Taylor, newly appointed by the City of Traverse City Commission to serve on the L&P Board for a term of five years, was also introduced at the meeting.
“Having a citizen-owned electric utility is a huge asset that gives Traverse City many opportunities, especially for moving toward 21st century renewable energy and moving away from coal,” said Mr. Coco. “I will focus on connecting with our customers and the community about energy, the options we have available, as well as the challenges we face. Expanding our successful energy efficiency programs and achieving our strategic goal of 30 percent renewable energy by 2020 will take wide community support. I look forward to helping build and implement that support.”
Coco has served two years on the L&P Board. Prior to being appointed to the board by the city commission in 2008 as a residential representative, he had chaired the economic development subcommittee of the Citizen's Operational and Financial AnalysisCommittee (COFAC), which studied the City's finances and operations, including the component units of Traverse City Light & Power, Downtown Development Authority, and the Traverse City Housing Commission. Mr. Coco is Vice President of Choice Property Resources, Inc., headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. He and his family reside in Traverse City where Mr. Coco also volunteers on several nonprofit boards supporting youth rugby.
Linda Johnson, Vice-Chairperson, served as Chairperson of the L&P Board during the last two years and from 2005 – 2007. She first served on the L&P Board from 1992 –1999 and was reappointed as an At-Large Director in 2003. Johnson’s experience includes serving as a Traverse City Commissioner for five years, including serving as Mayor of Traverse City in 1993, and serving six years on the Traverse City School Board, including service as president of the school board in 1987. Johnson has also owned her own business, Draperies on Wheels, for 15 years, and is a member of Traverse City Rotary Club. She and her family live at the Port of Old Mission.
John Taylor will bring an extensive background in energy efficiency to the L&P Board. Taylor is Senior Program Manager for a consortium of energy organizations, managing energy efficiency and water conservation programs. Mr. Taylor also serves as chairperson of the board of SEEDS, a solutions-focused environmental non-profit organization. He and his family live in the Boardman neighborhood of Traverse City.
“In addition to ensuring Light and Power makes smart investments to meet our baseload energy needs, I’m interested in working with staff and the board to help our community be more efficient with energy,” said Taylor. “Continuing our successful energy efficiency programs also reduces the need for coal fired generation”.
Traverse City Light & Power (www.tclp.org) is a community-owned, community-focused municipal utility that offers reliable energy at low rates in the region to over 10,000 customers in Traverse City, and parts of Blair, East Bay, Elmwood, Garfield, Peninsula and Paradise townships.
