TCLP’s electric generation mix includes solar, wind, landfill gas, natural gas, coal and electricity purchased through the regional energy market. Renewable energy comes from a combination of local solar arrays and partnerships with renewable energy projects throughout Michigan and the region.
The charts provide a monthly snapshot of TCLP’s electric generation sources, including the amount of electricity supplied by each resource. Generation levels and percentages vary based on customer demand, weather, resource availability and energy market conditions.

Renewable Energy
TCLP is building a cleaner, more diverse energy portfolio through local generation, long-term power purchase agreements and partnerships with renewable energy projects across Michigan and the region. Traditional and Market-Based Energy Sources
Coal, natural gas and electricity purchased through the regional energy market continue to support TCLP’s ability to provide reliable power when renewable resources are unavailable or customer demand is high. The amount supplied by each source varies based on weather, energy demand, resource availability, contractual obligations and market conditions.
TCLP continues to evaluate its energy portfolio as it works to maintain reliable, affordable electric service while progressing toward its renewable energy goals.
Belle River Power Plant
TCLP and the other municipal members of the Michigan Public Power Agency have partial ownership of the Belle River Power Plant on the St. Claire River. The fossil fuel power plant uses low-sulfur western coal to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.
Combustion Turbine Plant
A natural gas-fired combustion turbine power plant that serves TCLP and four other municipal utilities became operational on Nov. 25, 2002. The plant, which is located in Kalkaska County near Thomas and Prough Roads, was built in conjunction with MPPA.
J.H. Campbell Generating Complex
TCLP and the other municipal members of MPPA have partial ownership of the J. H. Campbell Generating Complex near Grand Haven. The complex produces electricity for Traverse City and several other Michigan communities.
