Customer Generation

Customer Generation Program

Welcome to Traverse City Light & Power’s (TCLP) Customer Generation Program! This program was previously under Net Billing and is also referred to as Distributed Energy Resources (DER). This program is designed to help customers integrate small-scale energy generation or storage systems, such as solar panels or batteries, with TCLP’s electric distribution system, allowing customers to generate or store electricity.

What is DER?

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are small energy systems that generate or store electricity. These systems are customer-owned, maintained, and interconnected with TCLP’s grid, producing energy for local consumption. DERs benefit customers, TCLP, and the community by promoting sustainable energy practices.

How to Get Started

The Customer Generation Program is available to TCLP Residential, Commercial, and Industrial customers for those who meet the requirements of the DER Application and Agreement.

Step 1: Application Submission

  1. Fill Out the Application
  2. Provide Required Data
    • Include a site plan, one-line diagrams, equipment details (e.g., inverters, solar panels), and interconnection protection system details.
  3. Understand Program Requirements

Step 2: Utility Review and Interconnection Study

Once TCLP receives your completed application, TCLP will:

  1. Review it for completeness and safety compliance.
  2. Conduct an Interconnection Study to assess the system’s impact on TCLP’s grid.
    • Installations above 500kW may require an in-depth study with additional fees.

Step 3: Application Approval

  • TCLP will inform you in writing if your application is approved, along with any specific conditions (e.g., adjustments to facility size).
  • Approval requires the execution of the DER Interconnection Agreement.

By joining TCLP’s Customer Generation Program, you’re not just making a smart energy decision—you’re contributing to a cleaner, more resilient future for Traverse City. Apply today and take the first step toward energy independence and sustainability!

TCLP’s previous Net Metering Program is no longer accepting applications. For inquiries about this program contact the TCLP Engineering Department at 231-932-4562.

Why Should you Apply for the Customer Generation Program?

Participating in Traverse City Light & Power’s (TCLP) Customer Generation Program offers numerous benefits for both you and the community. Here’s why you should consider applying:

Reduce your Energy Costs
  • Generate Your Own Power: By installing solar panels, batteries, or other DER systems, you can produce energy locally and reduce your reliance on the grid.
  • Lower Utility Bills: Excess energy generated by your system can offset your electricity costs.
Promote Sustainability
  • Clean Energy Contribution: DER systems, like solar panels, help reduce carbon emissions by utilizing renewable energy sources.
  • Support Community Goals: By participating, you contribute to a greener, more sustainable energy future for Traverse City.
Enhance Energy Independence
  • Energy Storage Solutions: Batteries and other storage systems allow you to store power for use during outages or peak times, improving your energy security.
  • Local Production: Rely less on centralized power sources by generating and consuming energy on-site.
Strengthen Community Resilience
  • Grid Stability: Your DER system can help stabilize the local grid by reducing demand during peak periods.
  • Emergency Preparedness: With stored energy solutions, your system can provide power during grid disruptions.
Incentives and Support
  • Streamlined Interconnection: TCLP’s program simplifies the process of connecting your system to the grid.
  • Professional Guidance: Receive expert support from TCLP during the application, design, and approval stages.
Lead the Way in Innovation
  • Be a Pioneer: By adopting DER technology, you become a leader in renewable energy adoption within the community.
  • Stay Ahead: Take advantage of emerging energy trends and technologies.
Improve Property Value
  • Desirable Feature: Homes and businesses equipped with renewable energy systems often have higher market value.
  • Future-Proof Investment: DER systems demonstrate a commitment to sustainable and cost-effective energy use.
