Beat the Heat and Save Energy This Summer

As summer temperatures rise, so can energy use—but it doesn’t have to. At Traverse City Light & Power, we’re committed to helping you stay cool while keeping your energy bills under control. Here are a few simple tips to help you save energy without sacrificing comfort during the hottest months of the year.

Set Your Thermostat Smartly

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78°F when you’re home and raising it a few degrees when you’re away. Every degree you raise it can help reduce your cooling costs by up to 3%.

Use Fans to Your Advantage

Ceiling fans don’t lower the temperature, but they make you feel cooler by creating a breeze. In summer, make sure your fan blades are spinning counterclockwise to push air downward. You can then raise your thermostat a few degrees and still feel just as comfortable.

Close Blinds During Peak Sun Hours

Keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day—usually between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.—to block direct sunlight from heating your home.

Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Lighting

Still using incandescent bulbs? Switch to LEDs, which produce far less heat and use up to 75% less energy.

Avoid Using Heat-Generating Appliances Midday

Try grilling outside, using a microwave, or delaying oven use until evening. Running dishwashers and clothes dryers at night can also help keep your home cooler.
