Powering Your Day, Risking Theirs: Work Zone Safety Awareness
At Traverse City Light & Power, our crews work hard every day to power your homes, businesses, and community infrastructure — often from the shoulder of busy roads. As spring and summer bring increased outdoor and maintenance activity, it’s critical to remember one thing: safety in work zones saves lives.
That’s why we’re spotlighting Michigan’s Move Over Law — a key protection for our lineworkers and service crews.

What Is the Move Over Law?
According to Michigan Compiled Laws 257.653a and 257.653b, all drivers are required to move over and slow down when approaching certain stationary vehicles with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights. This includes police, fire, EMS, tow trucks, road maintenance vehicles, and utility service vehicles — like ours.
What You’re Required to Do:
✅ On multi-lane roads: Move over one lane if safe and reduce your speed by at least 10 mph below the posted limit.
✅ On single-lane roads or when a lane change isn’t possible: Slow down by at least 10 mph and proceed with caution.
Why It Matters:
Our crews often work just feet sometimes inches from moving traffic. A single distracted or speeding driver can cause catastrophic injuries or fatalities. The Move Over Law is designed to prevent that.
The Consequences of Not Complying:
- Civil fines and points on your license
- Up to 90 days in jail for endangering utility workers
- Felony charges if your actions cause injury or death
Your Role in Keeping Everyone Safe
Whether you’re commuting, running errands, or visiting the beach, please be alert when driving near our work zones. Slow down. Move over. Let our crews go home safely at the end of the day — just like you.
