Stay Safe During Hunting Season: TCLP’s Safety Tips
As hunting season begins, Traverse City Light and Power reminds everyone to stay vigilant and prioritize safety in areas with electrical infrastructure. Power lines, transformers, and other utility equipment are spread across fields, forests, and even remote locations, and hunters, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts need to take extra precautions to avoid accidents. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:
1. Be Aware of Power Lines
- Always look for overhead power lines and utility poles before setting up blinds, tree stands, or firing shots. Power lines may be less visible against forested backgrounds, so always double-check your surroundings.
- Never use a utility pole or tower as a rest for firearms or other equipment. Climbing poles or towers is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injuries or fatalities.
2. Maintain a Safe Distance from Electrical Equipment
- Keep a safe distance from power lines, substations, and transformers. It’s best to establish a buffer zone of at least 50 yards when setting up near electrical infrastructure.
- Avoid parking vehicles near these structures, as an accident or stray shot could cause costly and dangerous electrical outages.
3. Know the Terrain
- Traverse City Light and Power urges hunters to scout their areas during the day to better understand the location of power lines and utility equipment.
- If you encounter downed lines, stay at least 30 feet away and report it immediately. Downed lines can still be energized and pose a risk of electrocution.
4. Be Mindful of Weather Conditions
- Wet or icy weather can affect power lines and increase risks. Avoid positioning yourself directly beneath power lines during extreme weather.
- If severe weather rolls in, prioritize your safety by leaving the area and avoiding proximity to any utility infrastructure.
5. Use Caution with Equipment
- Be mindful of the reach of your firearms and bows. Plan your shots carefully, always being conscious of what is behind your target, especially if there’s any utility infrastructure in the vicinity.
- Also, avoid using power line corridors as hunting paths or shooting lanes, as these can be hazardous and should remain accessible for utility workers.
6. Report Any Damage
- If you accidentally damage any utility equipment or see someone else doing so, please report it to Traverse City Light and Power immediately. Timely reporting can prevent more serious safety hazards and ensure a quick response to repairs.
By following these tips, hunters can enjoy a safe and productive season while helping protect the community’s vital infrastructure. Traverse City Light and Power is committed to delivering reliable service while supporting the safety of our community. Let’s work together to make this hunting season a safe one!
